What is SEO and why does your website need it?

The website is finished, it looks great, but customers aren’t coming. Very often the reason is simple — nobody can find it. This is where SEO begins.

What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is adapting your website so that search engines — mainly Google — understand it and show it to people who are looking for exactly what you offer.

When someone types “hairdresser in Riga” or “accounting services”, Google picks a handful of pages out of millions to show on the first page. SEO is the work of making sure your page is among them. Not by paying for ads, but because your page is the best answer to the question.

How does Google decide what to show?

Nobody has Google’s full algorithm, but three things are known for certain.

Content. Google looks for pages that answer a person’s question clearly and completely. If your service page has two sentences and a photo, a competitor with a clear description, prices and answers to common questions will have the advantage.

Technical quality. Speed, mobile performance, correct structure, a secure connection. A page that takes 6 seconds to load is worse in Google’s eyes than one that loads in 1 second — even if the content is the same.

Trust. Do other sites link to you? Do you have a Google Business profile with reviews? Is the site updated? Google prefers sites that look like a real, active business.

Why is it necessary?

Because search is how customers find services today. Most people start with Google, and most of them never get past the first page. If you’re on page three, you practically don’t exist.

Because it works while you sleep. Advertising stops when the budget runs out. A well-optimized site brings in customers for months and years without paying per click.

Because it’s cheaper than ads in the long run. SEO takes work at the start, but after that every new visitor costs nothing. With ads you pay for each one again and again.

Because there’s now another search engine — AI. More and more people ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI overview instead of scrolling through results. These tools take their answers from the same well-structured pages. A site that Google understands is a site that AI understands too.

What SEO is not

It’s not an overnight miracle. Results usually show up after 2 to 6 months. It’s also not stuffing keywords into text — that stopped working long ago and can even hurt. And it’s not a one-time job: competitors don’t stop, and Google keeps changing.
