Domain and hosting: what to choose and what it costs
Nobody thinks about domains and hosting. They are two technical lines on an invoice that were paid once and then forgotten. Until the day the site stops opening, email stops working, or it turns out that the company’s address on the internet formally belongs to somebody else. That is when it becomes clear they aren’t details — they are the foundation everything else stands on.
What a domain is and what hosting is
These are two completely different things that often get merged into one.
A domain is the address. yourcompany.lv — the name a person types into a browser or reads off a business card. A domain cannot be bought forever; it is leased for a year or several, and as long as the lease is valid, the rights to it are yours.
Hosting is the place. The server that holds your site’s files and delivers them to the visitor. An address without a place leads nowhere, and a place without an address cannot be found — you need both.
And there is a third thing that often gets counted as hosting: email on your own domain, for example info@yourcompany.lv. It can live somewhere entirely different from the site itself. That detail causes the most surprises at the moment a site is moved somewhere new.
Why a .lv domain matters in Latvia
It is a local signal. To a customer in Latvia, a .lv address looks like a company that genuinely works here, and for search engines it is an extra hint about which country the site is aimed at. For a small local business it is one of the simplest trust signals there is.
.lv domains are managed in one place. The Latvian domain registry is nic.lv, maintained by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Latvia. In practice that means a .lv domain is a transparent, well-ordered thing — the important question isn’t where to get one, but whose name it is registered in.
.com and other extensions aren’t worse — they serve a different purpose. If you work with clients abroad or are building a brand that isn’t tied to one country, an international extension may be the right choice. Quite often the answer is both: .lv as the main address and a second one reserved alongside it, so nobody else takes it later.
What it all costs
Less than people usually expect. Domain and hosting are not the part of a project that needs a real budget — for a small company site they usually come to just a few euros a month together. We keep them out of the development price not because they are expensive, but because they stay your property, registered in your company’s name.
What turns out expensive isn’t these items, but the mistakes in them. A domain lease missed and the address released, a slow server losing visitors before the page has even loaded, or a migration that leaves the email behind — all of that costs more than the service itself.
The actual figure depends on what the site genuinely needs. A simple company site is fine with a very simple setup; an online store or a system with a database needs different capacity. The sites we build run on the Cloudflare network — the page is delivered from the server closest to the visitor, the security certificate and backups are included, and running costs stay minimal. We tell you the exact figure for your case in the quote, before anything is bought.
Where domains and hosting usually go wrong
Most of the time the problem isn’t the choice, but ownership and access.
Sometimes a domain was registered years ago in the name of a former employee, an acquaintance or an agency, and today nobody can get into it. Sometimes renewal notices have been going for years to a mailbox nobody reads any more. Sometimes hosting was once chosen on lowest price and now loads the site slowly or falls over whenever visitor numbers rise. And sometimes the site, the domain and the email live in three different places and nobody knows who is responsible for what any more.
From the outside none of this is visible — the site does open, after all. It only surfaces when something needs changing or something has already broken. And every one of these things can be put right if it is noticed in time.
How we handle it
For new sites we take care of the domain and hosting ourselves: as part of website development we pick a setup that fits the particular site, register everything in your company’s name and make sure the site, the email and the certificates work together. For existing sites we do the same — we check who owns the domain, where the site is hosted and what is missing in all of it.
If you don’t know whose name your domain is currently in, where your site actually lives or why it loads slowly — book a consultation. We’ll find out, explain in plain language how things look, and find the right solution for your particular situation.
